ACP builds 3 basic versions of capstan winches to suit various applications. Shown below are the L series, C series and W series winches.

Specification charts and prices are located at the bottom of this page.

The winch at the left is a L series model LHB7-RC shown with the optional attachment plate. A wide variety of attachments and accessories can be found on the winch options page.

L Series Capstan Winches

The large capstan on the L series is advantageous when working at higher speeds or with larger diameter ropes.

The LH is the heavy duty version. The LS version is the same basic winch with a lighter and less powerful drive unit. The LS series is well suited for higher speed applications where less capacity is needed.

L series capstan winches have the following features:

  • Large 11 inch diameter drum with a 7 inch diameter x 7 inch wide working surface.
  • Fully machined working surface to minimize rope fraying and wear.
  • Space saving design with a large portion of the drive unit located inside the capstan drum.
  • Large heavy duty, slow turning hydraulic motors for a long life.
  • Pressure fed hydraulic lubrication eliminates maintenance and internal corrosion.
  • Three mounting styles are available for all models. The model number suffix indicates the type of mount.
LH 7-F
Image
  • Fixed mount version. Also available with RF or RC mounts.
  • Dimensions: 12 1/4 in. high x 11 1/4 in. wide x 15 3/4 in. long.
  • Weight: 110 lbs
LH 7-RF
Image
  • RF style rotating base. The RF pivot is offset to the capstan. This allows the capstan to swing out so the rope can clear vehicles or fixtures.
  • Base rotates 360 degrees
  • 60 positions. Base locks in 6 degree increments
  • The winch can be lifted off of the base when the locking pin is removed.
  • Dimensions: 14 1/2 in. high x 11 1/4 in. wide x 17 in. long.
  • Weight: 125 lb.
LHB 7-RC
Image
  • Shown with the RC style rotating base. The RC mount has the same features as the RF version above, except the pivot is located in the center of the winch. The RC requires less room to rotate 360 degrees. RF or F mounts are also available on the LHB models.
  • The LHB series have a spring applied, hydraulically released, multi-disc wet brake. All of the L series winches brake hydraulically. Internal hydraulic clearances can allow the capstan to slowly creep back. The brake holds the capstan so the load can be held for an extended period of time without drifting out of position.
  • The spring brake also provides additional protection in the event of a hydraulic failure.
  • Comes standard with a manifold style mount dual counterbalance valve. See winch options for more information on counterbalance valves.
  • The brake is located inside the capstan as a space saving feature.
  • Reversible. Brake and counterbalance valves operate in both directions.
  • A case drain is required on LHB versions only.
  • Dimensions: 16 in. high x 12 in. wide x 16 in. long.
  • Weight: 140 lb.
LS 5-RC
Image
  • Shown with the RC mount. All LS models are also available with RF or F mounts.
  • Shown with the drum lock option. The ratchet type action locks the capstan in the reverse direction only. The winch brakes and holds the load hydraulically. The drum lock eliminates any hydraulic creep and allows the load to be held for an extended period of time without drifting out of position. See winch options for more information about the drum lock.
  • Without the drum lock option, the back rim of the LS capstans have no notches and are smooth like the LH capstans shown above.
  • Dimensions: 16 in. high (without drum lock option) x 12 in. wide x 15 1/2 in. long.
  • Weight: 116 lb. (without drum lock).
C Series Capstan Winches
  • C series capstans have specially designed drums that have traction and grip equal to larger drums of typical design.
  • The CH version provides a powerful, heavy duty unit in a compact, portable size.
  • Can handle up to 1 inch diameter rope. If used often with ropes larger than 3/4 inch, the larger L series is recommended.
  • Large heavy duty, slow turning hydraulic motors assure a long life.
  • All of the CH models shown below are available with either a 30, 50 or 70 size drive unit. The model suffix designates the style of winch.
  • A CH 70 is about 3 pounds heavier than a CH 50 and a CH 50 is about 4 pounds heavier than a CH 30.
  • The CL version has the same size capstan and a lighter, less powerful drive unit for applications where less capacity is needed.

  • Line pull and speed are based on 5/8 in. dia. rope.
  • We recommend selecting the lowest practical operating pressure. This will increase the life of the hydraulic components.
